Gilmer County Jail Overview
Gilmer County Adult Detention Center is the only local detention facility listed in the Gilmer County facility map. It is a county jail, not a state prison, city jail, federal prison, or ICE detention center. Official sheriff materials place the jail at 106 Brett Dickey Memorial Drive in Ellijay and identify the Gilmer County Sheriff's Office as the operator. The sheriff's detention page describes the division as responsible for safe, secure, humane custody for people awaiting trial or serving sentences ordered by the courts.
The detention division is staffed by uniformed detention officers under sheriff supervision. The official detention page names Captain Misty Williams as Adult Detention Center command staff, with Lieutenants William Bryan and Walter Leite also listed for the facility. It also describes 12-hour rotating shifts and a focus on security, inmate welfare, order, discipline, and state-mandated training.
The Gilmer County Sheriff's Office Adult Detention Center page shows the facility's official detention-center material, including the inmate information link, video visitation notice, command staff, and handbook access.
That source is the local starting point because it links the sheriff's jail page to the public roster and publishes the current video visitation rule for Gilmer County Adult Detention Center inmates.
Gilmer County Jail Capacity
The current official jail population figures come from the Georgia Sheriffs' Association Jail Report. For May 2026, Gilmer County reported 72 jail inmates and 146 permanent beds, which equals 49.3 percent of listed capacity. The same row reported 37 people awaiting trial, 11 state-sentenced inmates still held locally, no county-sentence inmates, and 2 other inmates. Those figures feed the broader Gilmer County inmate population picture.
Older captured reports often used 142 beds for Gilmer County Adult Detention Center. The May 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, and 2020 Georgia Sheriffs' Association rows used 142. A January 2019 Department of Community Affairs jail report also listed 127 inmates and 142 beds. No official local explanation was found for the 2026 increase from 142 to 146 permanent beds, so the safest use is to cite the report date with the number.
Gilmer County Inmate Lookup
The official roster for Gilmer County Adult Detention Center is the sheriff-linked Gilmer County OffenderIndex portal. The roster is operated through Eagle Advantage Solutions and is the best first step for current county jail custody. It has separate tabs for Current Inmates, Bookings Over Last 24 Hours, and Inmates by Booking Date. A released person may not remain easy to find through the current-inmate tab, so older booking material may require a sheriff open-records request.
OffenderIndex is for the county jail. It should not be used as the main search tool after a sentenced felony inmate transfers to the Georgia Department of Corrections, and it is not a federal or immigration locator. For a broader custody path, start with the local roster, call the jail if the online search does not answer the question, then use GDC, BOP, ICE, or VINELink only when the facts point away from Gilmer County jail custody.
- Open the Gilmer County OffenderIndex portal from the sheriff's Adult Detention Center page.
- Use Current Inmates for present custody, or use Bookings Over Last 24 Hours for a very recent intake.
- Search by first name, last name, or booking-date range when the date tab is more useful.
- Open the detail row to review charges, sentence information, visitation data, history, and other fields.
- Call Gilmer County Adult Detention Center at 706-635-4625 when the online record is unclear or not yet posted.
The OffenderIndex roster shows the public inmate tabs and search fields used for Gilmer County Adult Detention Center roster searches.
The roster source code reviewed for the research file showed detail tabs for charges, sentence, visitation, history, and other information, but public booking photos were configured off.
Gilmer County Jail Record Fields
A Gilmer County Adult Detention Center roster record is a jail custody record, not a complete court file. It may show arrest and charge details before a final court result exists. The court name and charge fields help point a reader toward the court record, but formal charges, case filings, and dispositions should be verified through the clerk or court access system.
| Roster field | What it means for lookup |
|---|---|
| Name, sex, height, weight | Basic identifiers visible in the public row. |
| Arrest date and time | The roster's booking-related date field for jail intake. |
| Days in jail | How long the person has been shown in current custody. |
| Arresting officer | The officer field tied to the custody record. |
| Total bond | The combined bond figure shown on the roster row when available. |
| Charges tab | Warrant number, counts, statute, description, offense type, and court. |
| Other tab | Inmate ID and age, while date of birth and address were configured hidden. |
The inspected roster template includes a mugshot/photo area, but showPhotos() returned false and the public API call used getImg=false. That means the Gilmer County Adult Detention Center roster should be treated as a custody and charge lookup, not a public mugshot gallery. For more detail on current custody records, use the Gilmer County jail inmate records path with the roster search fields in mind.
Gilmer County Jail Contact
Use the jail address for custody, bond, visitation, mail, and inmate-information questions. The sheriff's administrative office is a separate courthouse office at 1 Broad Street, Suite 103, Ellijay, so callers should confirm which location they need before traveling. Public lobby hours were not located in the official sources reviewed.

Gilmer County Jail Visits
The current sheriff detention page says Gilmer County Adult Detention Center no longer offers in-person public visitation. Online video visitation is available seven days a week through JailATM, and visitors must set up an account through that vendor. The older inmate handbook still has a dorm-based in-person schedule, but the current sheriff web page controls public-facing visitation guidance.
Attorney visits are different from family and friend visits. The handbook says attorney visits are allowed any time, day or night, and they do not count against weekly family or friend visitation. Anyone trying to visit in person for legal work should still call the jail first because public visitation rules and professional access rules are not the same.
| Visit type | Current status | Access |
|---|---|---|
| Public in-person visit | Not offered | Current sheriff page says no in-person visitation. |
| Online video visit | Available | Seven days a week through JailATM account scheduling. |
| Attorney visit | Available | Handbook says any time, day or night. |
| Legacy dorm schedule | Superseded | Use only as older handbook context unless the jail confirms it. |
Note: Confirm the current visitation channel with Gilmer County Adult Detention Center before making travel plans.
Gilmer County Jail Mail
The inmate handbook supplies most of the mail, commissary, property, and electronic-message details for Gilmer County Adult Detention Center. It allows received letters in housing, with a limit of 20 letters, when they have been sent through the postmaster. It also allows two paperback books if bought and sent from the publisher, including religious reading material. Legal papers are treated separately from normal personal mail.
Commissary is described as a source for snacks and personal hygiene items. Orders are due by Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. and are distributed Friday or Saturday. The handbook says commissary items are not returnable unless commissary made the mistake, and released inmates must pick up commissary items and personal property within seven days. JailATM is confirmed for video visitation, but no official Gilmer deposit fee table, kiosk rule, or money-deposit vendor detail was located.
| Service | Published Gilmer County detail |
|---|---|
| Letters | Up to 20 received letters in housing, sent through the postmaster. |
| Books | Two paperback books, bought and sent from the publisher. |
| Commissary deadline | Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. |
| Commissary distribution | Friday or Saturday. |
| Video visits | JailATM account scheduling is the confirmed vendor channel. |
| Funds at release | Handbook says funds are released by debit card. |
Gilmer County Jail Booking
A person arrested by the Gilmer County Sheriff's Office, Ellijay Police, East Ellijay Police, Georgia State Patrol, or another agency may be brought to Gilmer County Adult Detention Center if accepted into local custody. Booking creates the jail record that can later appear in OffenderIndex. The public row is configured around identifiers, arrest date and time, days in jail, arresting officer, total bond, and expandable charge or sentence details.
Handbook rules show the intake environment even though they do not publish every booking step. Inmates may be searched for contraband, issued property, screened for medical approval where needed, and classified into housing. The handbook references dorms, booking, medical, isolation areas, and work-force inmates, but no public pod map or housing assignment field was confirmed on the roster.
- Booking
- The jail intake record created after arrest and acceptance into local custody.
- Classification
- The jail's housing and supervision decision after intake review.
- Detainer
- A hold from another agency or jurisdiction that may affect release.
- First appearance
- An early court hearing where bond and counsel questions may be addressed.
Gilmer County Jail Bond
The inmate handbook says bond can be made any time, day or night, for bondable offenses. It describes bond as a good-faith promise that the person will appear in court. If the person fails to appear after release, the handbook says re-arrest on a bench warrant usually follows, and that bench warrant has no bond.
Cash bond, property bond, and professional bonding companies are addressed in the handbook. Property bond must be backed by deeded real property in Gilmer County, usually with a residential home, and does not apply to cars, trailers, equipment, boats, or similar property. Professional bonding companies must be licensed in Gilmer County and registered with the sheriff's office. Jail staff cannot recommend a company.
Gilmer County Jail Programs
Official materials show a few local custody programs and conditions for Gilmer County Adult Detention Center. The handbook says the jail has an Inmate Work Force, sometimes called trustee work. An inmate may request placement after 10 days by filling out a trustee application. Selection requires a file review by the Watch Commander and medical clearance, and trustee status may be ended at any time by detention staff.
The grievance process is also specific. A grievance must be written, signed, sealed in a staff-provided envelope, and delivered through the floor officer to a lieutenant or captain. The handbook says staff should receive enough facts to understand the complaint. It also says grievances may not cover court decisions, parole board decisions, disciplinary decisions, routine housing movement without loss of privileges, or matters beyond jail control.
Gilmer County Custody Fallbacks
Gilmer County Adult Detention Center is the first lookup source for local jail custody, but it is not the only custody system that may matter. The Georgia Department of Corrections Find an Offender tool is for people in GDC facilities after transfer to state custody. Georgia.gov notes that county jail offenders should be searched through the county site, so GDC is a fallback for sentenced state prisoners, not for a new Gilmer County booking.
Federal and immigration custody use separate tools. The Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator searches federal inmates from 1982 to present, while the ICE Online Detainee Locator System searches current ICE custody by A-Number or biographical information. No BOP or ICE detention facility was located in Gilmer County. VINELink Georgia can help with custody notifications, but it is an alert service rather than the full jail roster.
Gilmer County Jail Records
When the online roster does not show enough detail, sheriff records may be requested through the open-records process. The research file identifies the sheriff open-records form as the route for book-in reports, incident reports, CAD pages, audio, video, and other sheriff records. The form lists a book-in report at $2 and says retrieval is $21.83 per hour after the first 15 minutes, with three-business-day acknowledgement and cost-estimate language.
Georgia's Open Records Act, O.C.G.A. 50-18-70 et seq., governs access to public records, while O.C.G.A. 50-18-71 deals with cost and timing. Booking photos are more restricted than basic booking data under Georgia law, and the inspected Gilmer County roster was configured not to display public mugshots. Court records after an arrest should be checked with the clerk or court access provider, while the jail roster remains the custody source.
Note: A jail roster entry is not proof of conviction, and court records should be checked for case results.
